Emergency pedagogy Intervention January 2018

Since the Project’s inception in 2012 there has been seven international interventions have been conducted in Kakuma by  the Emergency pedagogy team led by Bernd Ruf  . These interventions are addressed at psychologically traumatized children and adolescents. Emergency pedagogy helps stabilize affected individuals psychologically and socially. This is done by supporting them in their efforts to process the traumatizing events, and thereby integrate them into their own biography. Through the activation of the body‘s self healing powers, possible long-term post-traumatic stress disorders can be minimized or avoided altogether. The emergency pedagogic interventions are based on conceptions of Waldorf education and closely related therapeutic activities.

The international team comes in to support the Kenyan team working with the children and also offering trainings in the afternoon to the teachers. After an opening event, daily lectures about developmental pedagogical questions in the psycho traumatic context are held. In addition to general questions about psychotraumatology and emergency pedagogy, there is usually a special focus on child development and developmental disorders in light of traumatic experiences. Focus is also given on the artistic activities, movement, and rhythmic exercises. The next intervention is scheduled to take place in January 2018
